Walking and Health-About

Walking Path in Forest

Walking and Health was created because there is a great need to have access to a Marketplace where you can find everything you need to outfit yourself for walking. The correct running shoes, running socks, and running outfit are very important. Whether you are young or young at heart, thin or overweight, tall or short, have a regular size foot or need a wide, you can find it here at the Walk and Health Marketplace.

I signed up a year ago to walk in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer with no training at all. I consider myself to be overweight. I consider myself to be in semi-good shape for being overweight. I walked in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer that was held in Long Beach, California. There are walks held throughout the United Sates. It is a wonderful two-day experience. Every walker must raise $1,800 dollars and it doesn’t matter how far you walk, but most of the walkers walk between 13 and 26 miles the first day and then 13 miles the second day. Most of the walkers sleep in tents and wake up sore and with blistered feet, but they get up and do it again the next morning. Inspiration abounds.

The majority of the walkers are everyday people like you and me. We don’t wake up every morning and run 10 miles a day. Most of us have families, husbands or wives, children (I have four of my own) and work full time jobs (I am an accountant). Anybody can walk is pretty much what I am driving at.

I was able to walk 13 miles the first day and 13 miles the second day. I signed up in April and the walk was in September. As I trained I realized that I wasn’t equipped with the proper gear for walking. I had normal everyday tennis shoes and as I started training and increasing my distance, I realized that the type of shoe I was wearing was just not cutting it. I also realized my socks were causing friction and that I needed to get proper socks. My clothes were ok for walking through my neighborhood, but if I was going to walk in a “marathon” (26 miles), I couldn’t wear jeans and a T-shirt, I needed to be properly outfitted to prevent chaffing and to keep myself comfortable and not become overheated. I needed a full fashion makeover. Pretty was out and practical was in.

I found myself searching around for all these different items. I quickly learned that if you are going to put your body and your feet through 26 miles of walking, everything had to be geared more towards a runner, rather then a walker. I had to get running shoes, running socks, comfortable exercise shorts, and a comfortable top.

Whether you are purchasing walking gear for leisure or to walk in a marathon, or somewhere in between, you can find it all right here in the Walking and Health Marketplace. Please check back often for updates and more articles about walking and the many health benefits walking provides.

To browse through the Marketplace please click on Walking Gear or specifically Walking Shoes on the sidebar. Please check back often.
